Vulcan, who’s namesake means “volcano,” was tossed into Mount Etna, an active volcano in Sicily, by his mother, the goddess Juno, for being ugly and lame. It was these imperfections that compelled Vulcan to seek perfection in his craft as the blacksmith for all the gods and goddesses in Olympus. He forged his weapons and armor, thrones, and jewelry in the red-hot flames of the volcano. Vulcan’s fiery personality is balanced by the beauty and elegance of his wife, Venus, the goddess of love.
